Some Signs It’s Time for a New Thermostat

Many heating issues are signs that a thermostat needs to be replaced. You can enjoy a lovely new furnace and all its energy efficiency, but if the thermostat does not regulate it correctly, you will never see the desired benefits. If your thermostat continues to act up even after you check settings and change batteries, you likely need a new one. Here are the five warning signs of a failing thermostat in Mabank, TX:

  • Lost settings: If you have a programmable thermostat, it should maintain its settings until you change them. This includes even after power outages, since these thermostats normally run primarily on batteries or use them as backup power. If you find your settings disappear, it’s likely that your thermostat is worn out and needs to be replaced. Programmable thermostats have been on the market long enough to start failing, and there is a chance your home has an older one.
  • Heat doesn’t activate: You should be able to activate heating and cooling from your thermostat. So, when adjustments do not result in that familiar furnace roar, you likely have a big problem on your hands. Sometimes, there may be an issue with your furnace, but thermostat issues should be eliminated first. Call soon when your thermostat becomes unresponsive or you will not have any way to activate heat when you need it.
  • Your furnace roasts your house: Besides not activating heat or cooling, failing thermostats may never turn it off. If your heat continues even after your home reaches the desired temperature, your thermostat is likely not telling it to deactivate. This also raises your heating bills, since your furnace is creating heat unnecessarily. Again, you should be able to control when heat activates and stops from your thermostat. If that becomes impossible, call an HVAC technician immediately.
  • Short cycling: Short cycling is when your HVAC system does not finish a heating or cooling cycle. So, if you set your thermostat at 67 degrees, your system should stop when your home reaches that temperature. But if it stops at 64 degrees, that is a short cycle, and that renders heating and cooling less effective and your home becomes uncomfortable. Once you confirm your correct settings and see that your thermostat isn’t reaching them, call for an HVAC technician.
  • Unresponsive screen: If you find the screen on a programmable thermostat turns off, check the batteries first. Once you change the batteries, the screen should reactivate and solve the problem. If not, you may be facing a repair or replacement issue, especially if any adjustment to settings fails to activate heating or cooling. Like anything else, sometimes thermostats just simply die, and that becomes the perfect opportunity to replace yours.
